The Environmental Engineering of Buildings, Part I
The first part of a sequence taught over two terms that provides a broad introduction to Building Systems, Environmental Control and Energy Conservation. Sustainable design themes and environmentally responsible practices are stressed throughout and form a backdrop to all the instructional material provided. The fall course focuses on fundamental concepts and provides an introduction to Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Lighting, Acoustical and Life Safety systems. ARC 515, taught in the spring, considers the design process and the integration of these systems into buildings.

The course includes classroom instruction, assignments, quizzes and short field trips. Over the two terms, students work in groups of 4 to 6 to design a building that integrates the various building systems with architecture and structure. The projects explore the opportunities provided by climatic conditions and building systems to inform and enrich architectural design, ultimately resulting in a carbon neutral building.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
All undergraduate students must have permission of the instructor to enroll..
Students will be assessed on the quality of their classroom participation, assignments and project work as well as on quiz results. There will be no mid-term or final examinations.
