Advanced Physical Chemistry: Chemical Dynamics and Thermodynamics

This course is an introduction to statistical thermodynamics, kinetics, and molecular reaction dynamics. Following a review of classical thermodynamics, the statistical mechanics of molecular systems is developed. Discussions of transport properties, chemical kinetics, and reaction dynamics form the rest of the course.

Reading/Writing assignments:
One problem set and roughly one chapter of reading per week.

Open to Juniors and Seniors Only.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
MAT 201 or equivalent. Some knowledge of thermodynamics is useful. This course is open to freshmen and sophomores only with instructor's permission..

Other information:
Students who purchased McQuarrie/Simon "Physical Chemistry:A Molecular Approach" for CHM 405 can use the second half of the book covering Statistical Thermodynamics for CHM 406. No additional text is needed.
