Energy Conversion and the Environment: Transportation Applications

This course will develop an overview of energy utilization in and environmental impacts of current and future propulsion systems for ground, air, and space propulsion applications. Principles of advanced internal combustion, electric hybrid, and fuel cell energy conversion systems for ground transportation will be introduced. Relevant thermodynamics, chemistry, fluid mechanics, and combustion fundamentals will be stressed, and performance properties of power plants, control of air pollutant emissions, and minimization of resource-to application carbon emissions will be explored.

Homework problems and readings. Check Blackboard within two weeks of course initiation for recommended textbook purchases. Library reserve of all references will be available.

Mid Term Exam - 30%
Final Exam - 35%
Class/Precept Participation - 5%
Problem set(s) - 30%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
MAE 221 and MAE 222 or equivalent, or by permission of instructor..

Other information:
Aero propulsion systems, primarily gas turbines, and chemical rocket propulsion design principles, performance, and pollutant emission properties will be discussed. Current and future energy carrier options for transportation applications will also be considered.
