Topics in Romanticism - Romantic Passions

Esther H. Schor

"Romantic passions" is a key term that juxtaposes the erotic and the religious, the bodily and the transcendental. To get a purchase on the full range of human passions, Romantic-era writers developed some extreme types, among them the fanatic, the convert, and the pervert. We will explore these types in works that push the envelope of form and twist the sinews of genre. Students are encouraged to consider the legacy of these types in contemporary culture. Two ninety-minute seminars.
