Masterpieces of French comedy from the beginnings to the present, studied within their political, social and cultural contexts. Readings this semester will include plays by Molière, Marivaux, Beaumarchais, Musset, Labiche, Jarry, Romains, Ionesco, and Reza as well as excerpts from critical and theoretical texts, and will be supplemented by videos of recent stage versions and cinematic adaptations.

Reading/Writing assignment:
70-100 pages of reading per week. Weekly discussion board, 2 papers, oral presentation.
