The McGraw Seminar in Writing - Reporting from the Developing World

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

This seminar focuses on foreign reporting from the vibrant and often unruly swath of globe where most of humanity lives, the developing world. We will use the best literary journalism from Africa, Latin America and Asia to help guide writing assignments that delve thoughtfully into the daily struggles, mass migrations, wars and fragile nation-building efforts of the world's poor--overlooked stories that are reshaping our borderless world.

Sample reading list:

Reading/Writing assignment:
Approximately 6-8 hours of preparation a week, consisting of reading, reporting and writing, Five short pieces and one longer one.

Requirements/Grading:
Papers - 70%
Precept Participation - 30%

Not Open to Freshmen.

Other information:
Paul Salopek, foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, reports from Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans and Latin America. He is the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes.
