Princeton Atelier - Movement Improvisation and the Choreographic Process

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

Professor of Dance Susan Marshall and Toronto-based choreographer Sharon Moore will lead a course on movement improvisation and its uses in a choreographic process. Moore, a dance, film, circus, and theater choreographer/director is a master at leading artists through movement- and theater-based improvisation. Various improvisation approaches will be actively explored as choreographic tools and as ways to sharpen a dancer's performance and deepen the collaborative trust within a group. Students will work in small groups as Marshall's dancers and as collaborating choreographers of their own works.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Guest artists specializing in contemporary dance improvisation techniques such as Forsythe Improvisation Technologies, a system of directives that facilitate moving the body in relationship to itself and to space, and Gaga, an approach that focuses on layering tasks with an awareness of bodily sensation, tension and effort, will also join the class for special sessions. Students are expected to work on movement assignments outside of class time.

Requirements/Grading:
Class/Precept Participation - 80%
Other (See Instructor) - 20%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Students with strong/advanced dance backgrounds and an interest in working creatively and in collaboration are encouraged to apply. Students who have taken intermediate or advanced technique classes with the Dance Program may be qualified. Several spots will be available for actors with movement ability and strong interest. Other information:
Susan Marshall, artistic director of Susan Marshall & Co., is a 2000 MacArthur Fellow. She has collaborated with Philip Glass and created dances for the Lyon Opera Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet among other companies. Sharon Moore is a choreographer, dancer and movement coach for stage and screen, and first Canadian recipient of the Bessie Schonberg Commission Award. Moore recently collaborated with Derek Aasland on le livre des souhaits, a new circus show.
