Roman Republican Historians

The course offers an introduction to the two major historians of the late Republic, Sallust and Caesar. In addition to close readings of both authors' works, we will focus on such larger issues as the political role of the historian, and the impact contemporary concerns had on each writer's shaping of Rome's past.

Sample reading list:
Sallust, The War with Jugurtha
Caesar, The Gallic Wars

Reading/Writing assignments:
Daily readings in the texts of Sallust and Caesar; one final paper of 1,500 words.

Requirements/Grading:
Take Home Mid term Exam - 25%
Take Home Final Exam - 30%
Papers - 20%
Class/Precept Participation - 25%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
LAT 203. Prerequisite to course is LAT 203 or above or instructor's permission..
