Dante's <i>Inferno</i>

Simone Marchesi

Intensive study of the "Inferno", with major attention paid to poetic elements such as structure, allegory, narrative technique, and relation to earlier literature, principally the Latin classics. Course conducted in Italian with highly interactive classes and preceptorials.

Reading/Writing assignments:
The weekly readings are short in length (ca. 25 pages), but demand a great deal of intensive work (a minimum of 5-6 hours would seem necessary).

Requirements/Grading:
Mid Term Exam - 20%
Term Paper(s) - 50%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%
Other (See Instructor) - 10%

Other information:
Course will take advantage of the wide array of resources available on campus to Dante students, from Firestone's holdings to the web-based Princeton Dante Project.
