Hispanic Studies: Introduction to Cultural Analysis
An introduction to the analysis of contemporary cultural texts (narrative, poetry, film, photography, painting, music) from Latin America and Spain, with the support of various theoretical ideas (metafiction, intertextuality, death of the author, the other, mourning and melancholia, the uncanny, orientalism).

Reading/Writing assignments:
About 50 pages per week and/or viewing of one or two films outside class time. All literary readings will be in Spanish; theory readings, in English. Films will be in Spanish with English subtitles. Weekly 400 word commentaries on the assigned readings or films. Three 1,800 word papers (approximately six pages) on works assigned by the instructor.
