Fall 2012-2013* HIN 101 / URD 101 na, npdf
Elementary Hindi and Urdu I
This introductory proficiency-based course in Urdu-Hindi allows students to acquire linguistic skills in culturally authentic contexts. Hindi and Urdu share a basic grammar and core vocabulary but differ in their scripts and some cultural markers. Equal emphasis is placed on Hindi and Urdu, including writing systems, vocabulary, and culture. The course will focus on using language for genuine communication through a variety of activities. By the end of the course, students will be able to read and write both Hindi and Urdu scripts and communicate in a culturally appropriate manner. All classes will be interactive.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Grammar and vocabulary drills, writing, reading, listening and speaking assignments. Occasional assignments in which students interact with Hindi/Urdu speakers outside of class. Quizzes and presentations.

Other information:
This is the first course in a four-term sequence that fulfills the university language requirement. No credit is given for HIN/URD 101 unless it is followed by HIN/URD 102.
