Future Physics

What do future leaders of our society need to know about physics and technology? The course is designed for non-scientists who will someday become our influential citizens and decision-makers. Whatever the field of endeavor, they will be faced with important decisions in which physics and technology play an important role. The purpose of this course is to present the key principles and the basic physical reasoning needed to interpret scientific and technical information and to make the best decisions. Topics include energy and power, atomic and subatomic matter, wave-like phenomena and light, and Einstein's theory of relativity.


Reading/Writing assignments:
The weekly assignments are: reading (1-2 hours) and homework (2-4 hours).

Requirements/Grading:
Mid Term Exam - 25%
Final Exam - 50%
Problem set(s) - 25%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Math skills at the level of high school algebra are assumed. No prior classes in physics or astronomy are necessary..

Equivalent Courses:
PHY 115A, PHY 115B are considered equivalent courses and cannot be taken multiple times for credit.

Other information:
PHY 115A is designed for those who want an introduction to the basic concepts combined with experience in quantitative reasoning. This version of 115 has no laboratory. For those who want an introduction to the basic concepts combined with a laboratory that further explores the ideas, please see PHY 115B.
