Ecosystems and Global Change
An introduction to the study of how humans are affecting complex ecological systems at local to global scales. Students will examine nutrient cycling, energy flow, and evolutionary processes, with emphasis on experimental approaches and comparisons between terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. Particular attention will be on human influences-climate change, biofuels, biodiversity loss, eutrophication, and acid rain. Lectures cover theoretical elements and examples from the primary literature. The laboratory is organized around local ecosystems in which students conduct independent group research projects.

Students will read assigned pages from primary journals (10-20 pages/wk) and sections from textbooks (20-30 pages/wk). There will be five take-home problem sets throughout the course, based on theoretical and literature-based questions. Students will conduct independent laboratory group projects that demand statement of a specific question, field-based measures to answer this question, a ten-minute presentation during a formal "class seminar" and a final term paper of 15-20 pages.

Students will conduct independent laboratory group projects that demand statement of a specific question, field-based measures to answer this question, a 10-minute presentation and a final term paper of 15-20 pages. Interested graduate students are welcome, but should email Prof. Hedin for permission. NOTE: The class meets each week for two lectures and one laboratory
