This course examines the modern field of molecular biology through the lens of bacteria, viruses and parasites, emphasizing the impact of microbes on everyday life. Topics will include pathogenesis (evolution of communicable diseases, molecular mechanisms of virulence, antibiotic resistance), microbial biology (cell division and differentiation, quorum sensing), and how microbes interact with their habitat (microbial diversity, biofilms, bioremediation, symbiosis).
