The Media in America
ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.
This seminar will discuss such topics as secrecy, national security, and a free press; reputation, privacy, and the public's right to know; muckraking and the "establishment" press; spin and manipulation; the rise of blogging; the economic impact of technological change on the news business.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Approximately 6 - 8 hours of preparation, divided between reading and writing. Eight short writing assignments; two 8-page papers.
Requirements/Grading:

Other information:
Evan Thomas, former Editor-at-Large for Newsweek, is the author of eight books. He has written more than a hundred cover stories for Time and Newsweek on national and international news. Writers and journalists will visit the class as guest speakers. Students will meet individually with Mr. Thomas every week to go over their writing.
