The New Audio Age of Journalism

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.
Audio storytelling is having a renaissance. Students will focus on the role of audio in multimedia journalism and learn how to report and write for the ear. They will create their own pilot public radio show and website. Through weekly readings and listenings, students will be introduced to the depth and breadth of audio storytelling. They will discover and share new pieces through a class blog. Visit to WNYC to watch a live broadcast.

Reading/Writing assignment:
6-8 hours of preparation a week, consisting of reading, reporting and writing. Six short pieces and final project: a 7-10 minute audio piece of a pilot show.
Requirements/Grading:
Papers - 70%
Precept Participation - 30%

Other information:
Dan Grech '99 of National Public Radio won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. He worked at the Miami Herald before becoming Latin American correspondent for NPR's Marketplace and co-producer of Voices.
