Making News

Martin Gottlieb

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

What makes news? How do journalists find, develop, and organize it compellingly and fairly? This course examines the work of consummate professionals who have helped define American newspaper and television journalism. Students will undertake projects and learn to make their work progress. Course will include film clips, guest speakers and a visit to the New York Times.

Reading/Writing assignment:
6-8 hours of preparation a week, consisting of reading, reporting and writing. Five short pieces and one longer piece.

Requirements/Grading:
Papers - 70%
Precept Participation - 30%

Martin Gottlieb is editor of Global Editions for the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune. He has also been a journalist at the Daily News and the Village Voice.
