Seminar in Global Health and Health Policy

This seminar will examine four major topics in global health. Potential topics include: the importance of patents in healthcare; AIDS in America; synthetic biology and biosafety; vaccine safety; the business of biology; the state of US healthcare; healthcare in emerging economies; and drug discovery and development.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Reading, requiring approximately 3-5 hours per week, of the current global health and health policy literature will be required as background preparation for each seminar meeting. Students will prepare written materials to support their roles as discussants and visual materials, i.e., slide show, for use in formal class presentations.

Requirements/Grading:
Oral Presentation(s) - 30%
Class/Precept Participation - 30%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
GHP 351/WWS 491 Critical Perspectives on Global Health and Health Policy, or permission of instructor..

Other information:
The course is organized into four topics and each will occupy three class meetings. For each topic, one class meeting will feature a presentation by an outside expert at which several students will serve as discussants. The remaining two classes will continue exploration of the topic through student presentations and discussion.
