Computational Design

This course is an introduction to computational design using a range of design concepts from NURBS modeling, simple programming and parametric modeling to basic digital fabrication and electronics. Through a series of computational exercises, presentations, and in-class discussions, we will investigate the evolving relationship between models of design and generative design issues of technology and culture in architecture.

Reading/Writing assignments:
There will be three components to the class. The first is a series of weekly and bi-weekly exercises that will be presented in class. Second, there will be discussions of ongoing work in progress linking it to the readings. Finally, there will be a final digital fabrication project due at the end of the term.

Design Project - 70%
Programming Assignments - 10%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Open to ARC and CEE - Arch & Engineering students ONLY. If seminar is oversubscribed, enrollment will be based on seniority..

Other information:
No previous computer experience is assumed. The emphasis in the course will be on the implications of the development of computational models for design and fabrication in architecture, and the conceptual and technical understanding required to produce them. Note: the final project in this course is a design project, which will be worth 40% of the final grade.
