Advanced Creative Writing (Poetry)

Advanced practice in the original composition of poetry for discussion in regularly scheduled workshop meetings. The curriculum allows the student to develop writing skills, provides an introduction to the possibilities of contemporary literature and offers perspective on the places of literature among the liberal arts.

Reading/Writing assignments:
One manuscript per week submitted. Reading of other students' submissions in advance of the workshop in which they are to be discussed. Other assigned readings and exercises. 30-80 pages of reading per week.

Not Open to Graduate Students.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Admission by application only and must have completed two 200-level poetry courses. Please visit the Creative Writing Program website ( for application information. Application deadline is November 22, 2015..

Other information:
Program IV English majors may use 2 creative courses at 300 or 400-level as departmentals. Individual conferences are scheduled at intervals during the semester. There are no exams. Attendance is mandatory. Students who have more than two unexcused absences will be automatically dropped from the course. This course cannot be audited.
