Principles of Quantum Engineering

Ravindra N. Bhatt

This course provides an understanding of the basic principles that govern the operation of modern solid state and optoelectronic devices. The emphasis is on fundamentals rather than applications. The course complements ELE 396, Intro to Quantum Computing. The major portion of the course will be devoted to quantum mechanics and statistical physics with examples from solid state and materials physics and quantum electronics. This provides the basic background needed to understand the physics of device operations and also prepares the student for more advanced courses in solid state and quantum electronics (such as ELE 441, 442 and 453).

Sample reading list:
Eisberg & Resnick, Quantum Physics of Atoms, Molecules, Solids, Nuclei, and...
McKelvey, Solid State Physics for Engineering and Materials Science
Griffiths, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics

Reading/Writing assignments:
Weekly problem sets and relevant readings. Expect about six hours of preparation outside the classroom.

Mid Term Exam - 30%
Final Exam - 45%
Problem set(s) - 25%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
(PHY103 or PHY105) and (PHY104 or PHY106).

Other information:
Background in differential equations very useful. Contact instructor for additional information.
