Modern Drama I

Robert Neil Sandberg

A study of major plays by Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekov, Pirandello, Brecht, Beckett and others. Artists who revolutionized the stage by transforming it into a venue for avant-garde social, political, psychological, artistic and metaphysical thought, creating the theatre we know today.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Two plays per week. Other 35% = Short papers in the format of Blackboard posts and responses.

Paper in lieu of Final - 35%
Oral Presentation(s) - 10%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%

Other information:
When possible, we will attend relevant productions and watch videos to better appreciate the fact that a play is a form of literature written to be performed. Department Distribution: Modernity
