Religion in American Society

This course explores the dynamics of religion in contemporary America. We consider such themes as religious encounter and conflict; patterns of tradition and change; the relation of religion to broader political currents and debates (including race, sexuality, gender, science, economics); "secular" spiritualties, the challenges of religious pluralism; and religion and popular culture.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Approximately 150-200 pages of reading per week; two short (4-5 page) papers; take-home midterm examination; take-home final examination; active participation in precepts.
