Policy Workshop - Non-Traditional Diplomacy & US Policy in the Middle East

Daniel C. Kurtzer

DEPARTMENT CONSENT IS REQUIRED TO ADD THIS CLASS

US government diplomacy in the Middle East has focused primarily on formal inter-governmental processes, such as bilateral diplomatic contacts, international conferences, state-to-state negotiations, and the like. The American government by and large has shown little interest in peace activities outside formal government channels, such as Track II meetings, people-to-people contacts, inter-religious dialogues, and citizen diplomacy. This workshop will examine the policy implications of maintaining or changing this posture, drawing on recent experiences in the Middle East.
