Policy Workshop - Slums and Service Delivery in India

Jeffrey S. Hammer

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

Urbanization is a central characteristic of successful developing countries. However, it comes with the challenges of housing migrants who are often relatively poor. This has led to large urban slums with uncertain property rights and weak claims to public services. This workshop examines the case of Indian cities, particularly Delhi and Ludhiana, that are trying to cope with large and growing informal settlements and how the residents get public services such as water, sanitation, solid waste collection, police, schools, electricity, healthcare, etc.
