Practice Teaching

Supervised practice teaching (a minimum of 12 weeks) in a secondary school. Teaching is done under the supervision of an accomplished teacher and a program staff member who regularly observe and discuss the student's practice teaching. Students gain firsthand experience in developing teaching strategies, planning and implementing instruction, assessing student learning, and classroom management. Must be taken concurrently with TPP 401.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Student teaching consists of planning and conducting all instructional responsibilities of classes in the school to which one is assigned. Students gradually begin teaching classes after a brief period of observation and by the fourth week the practice teacher has assumed responsibility for a teaching load of four or five classes daily. A journal must be kept throughout practice teaching.

Not Open to Freshmen.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Admission to the Teacher Preparation Program is usually required. Application for fieldwork placement must be made in advance. Completion of Pre-professional portfolio..

Other information:
Individualized reading requirements are determined by the courses to be taught by the practice teacher. Development of a work sample including individual lesson plans, a curriculum unit and other teaching materials is required (done in conjunction with TPP 401).
