Reading Literature: Poetry

This course will introduce students to the art of poetry written, spoken and sung in English over the course of nearly a millennium. Surveying forms as various as ballads and meditations, and writers from anonymous to the Beats, we will consider poetry as a form of beauty and a way of knowing.

Reading/Writing assignments:
15-40 pp. of reading per week; 12-15 poems per week and supplementary readings in criticism; two papers--a formal analysis of 5 pages and a research paper of 10-12 pages. Midterm take-home exercise of 7pp. Final take-home exercise of 8-9 pp.

Requirements/Grading:
Take Home Mid term Exam - 20%
Take Home Final Exam - 25%
Papers - 35%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Prospective concentrators are required to take ENG 200 and one course from the following: ENG 205, 206, 207, 208, 209. No laptops without permission because of disability..
