Reading Literature: Poetry

An introduction to poetry from the middle ages to the present through close reading of a series of great poems--from medieval songs to Ginsberg's "Howl"--and their criticism. We will invite living poets to come discuss their favorite poets of the past and we will attend a number of poetry events together.

Reading/Writing assignments:
20-40 pages of reading per week, a class presentation and full participation. A metrics exercise/quiz and two papers: a formal and content analysis of a poem (7 pages), and a research paper on a poet of your choice (12-15 pages).

Class/Precept Participation - 25%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Prospective concentrators are required to take ENG 200 and one course from the following: ENG 205, 206, 207, 208, 209. No laptops without permission because of disability..
