An Integrated, Quantitative Introduction to the Natural Sciences I

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

An integrated, mathematically and computationally sophisticated introduction to physics, chemistry, molecular biology, and computer science. This year long, four course sequence is a multidisciplinary course taught across multiple departments with the following faculty: C. Callan, J. Shaevitz (PHY); S. Shvartsman (CBE); H. Yang (CHM); P. Andolfatto (EEB); E. Wieschaus (MOL); O. Troyanskaya (COS); J. Gadd, B. Machta, A. Nourmohammad, Q. Wang (LSI). Five hours of lecture, one three-hour lab, one three-hour precept, one required evening problem session.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Reading, problem sets and lab reports totaling 10-15 hours each week will be assigned. Readings for Fall 231 & 232 will be based primarily on lecture notes, which will be available through Blackboard. In addition, students should follow the readings for COS126 in the first half of the semester.

Requirements/Grading:
Mid Term Exam - 20%
Final Exam - 20%
Lab Reports - 30%
Problem set(s) - 30%

Other Requirements:
Open to First Year Undergraduates and Sophomores Only.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Familiarity with the calculus at the level of MAT103/4 or Advanced Placement Calculus BC, solid high school physics and chemistry courses..

Other information:
Students must enroll in both ISC231 and ISC232, and must sign up for both an experimental lab (231) and a computer lab (232) each week. Students must also sign up for the Wednesday evening problem session (231 Class). Meets with COS126 on T/TH for the first 6 weeks. The full sequence, ISC 231-234, is alternative to the combination of PHY 103/104, CHM 201/202, COS126, and MOL214.
