Diverse methodological approaches for measuring health status, disease occurrence, and the association between risk factors and health outcomes will be presented via classic and contemporary studies of chronic and infectious illness and disease outbreaks. Emphasis on: causal inference, study design and sampling, bias and confounding, the generalizability of research, health policy and research ethics.

Sample reading list:
Gordis, Leon, Epidemiology, 4th edition
Buck, C, A Llopis, E Najera and M Terris (eds.), The Challenge of Epidemiology: Issues and Selected Readings
Rothman, Kenneth J., Epidemiology: An Introduction
See instructor for complete list

Reading/Writing assignments:
In addition to the required reading, students will select 5 case studies illustrating different epidemiologic study approaches (descriptive epidemiology, disease outbreak, case-control study, cohort study, clinical trial). One page summaries of the case studies will be turned in as written assignments. Case studies comprise 25% of the course grade.

Mid Term Exam - 25%
