Workshop on Social Organization

Paul E. Starr

A two-semester course for graduate students whose work lies in the fields of economic sociology, organizational sociology, institutional analysis (including historical institutionalism), and social network analysis. The workshop provides opportunities for students to develop research projects and presentation skills, and to read the work of and interact with scholars brought to campus by the Center for the Study of Social Organization.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Students enrolled for credit will be required to present their work at least once over the course of the year, as noted above; to lead discussions of readings at least once (and perhaps twice, depending upon enrollment); and to post weekly essays of at least 500 words on the workshop discussion board, as well as to post a comment on at least one other essay each week, in advance of the workshop meeting.

Other information:
This is a year-long course that must be enrolled in both semesters. Professor Paul Starr will teach the fall semester, and Professor Viviana Zelizer will teach the spring semester. Open to graduate students in their second year or later.
