Advanced Analysis of Environmental Systems

Humans are increasingly affecting environmental systems throughout the world. This course uses quantitative analysis to examine three of today's most pressing issues: energy, water, and food. Each issue is examined from perspectives of natural and engineered ecosystems that depend on complex interactions among physical, chemical, and biological processes. The course is an introduction for students in the natural sciences and engineering pursuing an advanced program in environmental studies. We emphasize quantitative analyses with applications to a wide range of systems, and the design of engineered solutions to major environmental problems.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Students will read 50 pages a week including articles in the reader and textbook. We will assign weekly quantitative problem sets and shorter essays. Students will discuss readings and assignments in weekly precepts. We will assign three group problem sets based on the course themes. Students will jointly develop these projects, write computer codes, develop basic quantitative models, and interact in a weekly group project study hall coordinated with the McGraw teaching center.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Prerequisites: Mathematics equivalent to MAT 104 or instructor's permission; and Chemistry equivalent to CHM 202 or instructor's permission; and Biology equivalent to EEB 211 or instructor's permission..

The course fills the requirement of a core course for the ENV certificate and counts towards the departmental requirements in CEE and EEB. Please contact Angela Petsis at for application information.
