Violent Politics

Governments have tremendous power over our lives and thus the competition over who controls them is always intense and often violent. This course will study various ways in which violence is used to political ends. The larger goal of the course is to understand the sources of violence in political competition and the conditions under which political disputes can be peacefully resolved. Specific forms of violence to be covered include assassination, civil war, ethnic conflict, insurgency, revolution, riots, terrorism, and war.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Approximately 100-250 pages of reading per week. There will be two 24-hour take-home multiple-essay exams. Students may substitute a 20-page term paper on some aspect of violent politics for one of the exams. Class participation is a key part of the class and students will be expected to have specific citations and clear arguments when they participate.

Requirements/Grading:
Take Home Mid term Exam - 35%
Take Home Final Exam - 35%
Class/Precept Participation - 30%

Other Requirements:
Open to Juniors and Seniors Only.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
Freshman and sophomores may enroll with permission of the instructor..
