War in the Modern Western World

David A. Bell

A survey of the history of war in the Western world since the late middle ages. Will cover both "operational" military history (strategy, tactics, logistics, mobilization, etc.), and also the relationship of war to broad changes in politics, society and culture.

Reading/Writing assignments:
125 pages of reading per week. Final Exam; Paper (6-8 pp.) on topic chosen from a list distributed by instructor; In-class mid-term exam.

Requirements/Grading:
Mid Term Exam - 25%
Final Exam - 35%
Papers - 20%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%
