Medical Spanish

Paloma Moscardó-Vallés

An advanced Spanish-language course that focuses on medical and health-related topics. Its main goal is to provide students with the tools to be able to interact with native-Spanish speakers in health settings. Students will improve their general communication skills and learn specific vocabulary needed for conducting a medical interview. Aspects of Latino culture in the health and medical fields are explored by means of examining authentic texts and through the contribution of guest speakers. The course includes a project in which students will interact with the local Latino community.

Reading/Writing assignments:
15-30 pages of reading per week. 3-4 short writing assignments. Two oral presentations. Final research project.

Community-Based Learning Component Required

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
SPA 107 (with instructor's permission) or SPA 108. Also open to students who have completed their Spanish language requirement through the Department's placement test or a satisfactory AP/SAT score (AP 5/SP SAT ST 760)..

Other information:
SPA 205 can be used as a Global Health certificate elective if the student does additional research for the final project.
