Spanish in the Community
This course explores the complexities of Spanish language in the United States. Through a variety of readings, videos, and documents in Spanish and English, we will address a range of issues including the past and present of Spanish language in the US, the relationship between language and identity, and the tensions and hopes around the maintenance of Spanish in immigrant communities.

Reading/Writing assignments:
120-180 pages reading per week. The course combines readings in Spanish (when available) and in English. Class discussion and course work in Spanish. Weekly assignments (reading journals); two oral presentations; participation in a community-based learning project; and a final research project/paper on a topic related to Spanish language and speakers in the U.S. Final project will be presented orally and in writing.
Requirements/Grading:
Paper in lieu of Final - 35%
Papers - 25%
Oral Presentation(s) - 10%
Class/Precept Participation - 15%

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
A 200-level SPA course or equivalent proficiency in Spanish (contact the instructor)..
