Pleasure, Power and Profit: Race and Sexualities in a Global Era

Pleasure Power and Profit explores the intimate ways that sexualities and race are entwined in contemporary culture, historically, and in our own lives. Why are questions about sexuality and race some of the most controversial, compelling, yet often taboo issues of our time? Exploring films, popular culture, novels, social media, and theory, we engage themes like: race, gender and empire; fetishism, Barbie, vampires and zombies; sex work and pornography; marriage and monogamy; queer sexualities; and strategies for social empowerment such as: Black Lives Matter, the new campus feminism, and global movements against sexual and gender violence.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Approximately 100-200 pages of reading a week, depending on whether we are reading a book, or individual articles. Participants will submit two papers (one of which may be creative): one mid-term (about 8 pages), one final (about 12-15 pages). Participants will submit a journal entry every week for the whole class to read. We will also divide into collaborative group projects for class presentations.

Other information:
Group Projects: The class will be divided into small groups. Each group will choose a theme for a collaborative project. Project themes can be wide-ranging, creative and inventive, but should relate to the themes of the course. Each group will give a class presentation on their project, using the resources of the new media: films, photographs, images, music, regular research. Group presentations should be as creative, inventive, compelling, original and informative as possible.
