Inequality: Dimensions and Intersections

The goal of this course is to examine how the constructs of race, class, and gender develop and change over time and by place. We will discuss various theories of race, gender, and class. In addition, we will consider how coexisting social hierarchies shape identities, determine life chances, establish relationships of marginality and privilege, and generate social stability and conflict. Racial formation, intersectionality, black feminist thought, and symbolic boundaries will be among the theoretical approaches discussed.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Students will complete 10 short (one page) memos on course readings and will write a midterm paper (6-8 pages). Details will be provided in class. Students will also write a final paper in the form of a research proposal. Detailed instructions will be provided in class.

Requirements/Grading:
Paper in Lieu of Mid Term - 25%
Paper in lieu of Final - 35%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%
Other (See Instructor) - 20%

Students are expected to take an active role in shaping their learning environment. Each class period, every student will come to class with either prepared questions or sections of the reading that they want to discuss. I encourage you to share your viewpoint during class discussions, even, and especially, if it contradicts that of others. During our class discussions, please show respect to me and other students who may have different perspectives from your own.
