Spanish Culture and Art

This course offers an overview of Spanish culture, history, art and society while developing a student's ability to do research in Spanish contexts. One part of the course cultivates investigation techniques by examining the works of Spanish artists, writers and filmmakers. The second part presents basic knowledge of the history and culture of Spanish society, from Sephardic culture and the Spanish Empire, to the memory of the civil war and the effects of the 2008 debt crisis. Materials will connect Toledo's history to national and global phenomena.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Approximately 200-230 pages of reading per week in English and Spanish, and/or two to three films and/or additional internet materials. Daily quizzes, four individual practices, one oral presentation, and two short final projects requiring some cultural and artistic research.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
SPA 207 or another 200-level SPA course, and instructor's permission/interview. Advanced placement exam score of 5, and/or heritage speakers..
