Documentary Filmmaking in Kenya - Visual Storytelling on Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation

ENROLLMENT BY APPLICATION OR INTERVIEW. DEPARTMENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED.

This seminar will guide filmmakers and Africanists to search for answers to two questions: How can the art of film advance the causes of science? How do communities use media to support their environmental activism? Students will work with scientists, filmmakers and environmental activists. Students will be trained in digital video production, screenwriting, and editing. Course will entail trips to the field. Weekly class in Swahili.


Reading/Writing assignments:
Film screenings, readings and discussions will complement weekly guest lectures by Africa-based filmmakers and journalists.

Requirements/Grading:
Papers - 20%
Class/Precept Participation - 20%
Other (See Instructor) - 60%

Other Requirements:
International Travel Required
Not Open to Seniors.
