Foundations of Engineering

This course provides a hands-on introduction to the foundational principles of engineering. The purpose of this course is two-fold. First, it provides a project-based introduction to engineering that mixes electronics, mechanical construction, and computational data analysis. Second, it provides a firm theoretical foundation for the project in both math and physics. In lab, students will have the opportunity to build, test, and iterate the design of a rocket. Complimenting the lab experience, students will engage in lectures and precepts to enhance their physics and mathematics content knowledge.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Short homework will be given after each lecture session. Short bi-weekly quizzes will ensure students retain lecture content. Quality of participation in group work and precepts will be assessed by instructional staff. The lab project will result in a final writeup that will assess lab and data analysis skills. There will be a final exam covering all material from the course.

Statistical, design or other software use required
Open to First Years Only.

Other information:
The breakdown of class time will vary by week. There will be one or two three-hour sessions devoted to lab each week. The remaining time will be split between physics and math, with lecture and precept/workshop sessions in each scheduled three-hour block. Precept will emphasize group problem solving to reinforce lecture content.
